How to Help Your Child Manage and Express Their Emotions.

BEHIND EVERY BEHAVIOUR THERE IS A FEELING

Is your child struggling with anxiety?

Are they unwilling to try anything?

Is their behaviour out of character and causing stress to the whole family?

I get it! For a number of years my son used to hide behind the curtain; he used to storm out of the room if he knew he had done something wrong and he never appeared to hear a word I said.

I knew something wasn’t right but I felt totally helpless because I didn’t seem able to get through to him. I also became increasingly frustrated with the school systems for dealing with a child who didn’t quite seem to fit into a specific box.

Then we discovered he had dyslexia and this led me on a path to understanding not just how dyslexics react to things but children in general.

You see children struggle to express emotions and if they are not taught to recognise, understand and work through their emotions they can end up suppressing the negative ones and this can cause a several things to happen

  1. Their body will produce higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol and the higher the levels of cortisol the more likely it is to lead to further health problems.
  2.  when children suppress emotions and bottle them up they actually make those emotions stronger and this can either be expressed in the form of ill health or in the form of a behaviour, which is amplified.

What can you do to help?

Children have so much to give and yet we are seeing more and more children suffering with mental health issues. For example, The National Health Executive states “One in six children and young people had a probable mental health disorder in July during the first wave of coronavirus, compared to just one in nine back in 2017”

Emotions are basically energy (the latin word for emotions is “emotere” = energy in motion) and if we can help children release their negative energy and build up their positive energy then I believe they will:

  • Develop greater resilience
  • Develop better coping skill
  • Perform better at school
  • Have a more positive sense of self

As an Holistic Therapist and qualified Pharmacist with experience teaching and working in special needs schools and as a parent of a dyslexic child, I understand how frustrating it can be both as a parent and from the child’s point of view when they are struggling and can’t explain what is wrong.

My experiences both with science and holistic therapies have made me realise that everything comes back to our feelings and the associated energy of those feelings.

In holistic therapy terms this energy affects the energy centres of our body which are known as chakras and if the feelings are negative and therefore the energy is negative it can cause blockages in the chakra system which leads to more disruption.

Meditating with the colour chakras

These chakras can be likened to a series of programmes responsible for different aspects of our lives eg power, love, communication.

How we manifest these aspects depends on the inputs we’ve had from childhood messages, traumas, societal demands, experiences and so on.

We have seven main chakras in our body, each represented by a different colour of the rainbow and each affected by different feelings. Children are generally very visual and even though they may not be able to verbally express how they are feeling they can usually tell you the colour of the feeling.

By using what I have termed “the behaviour equation” therefore, (behaviour + identified colour +/- physical issue = chakra and emotion) we can then employ the unique properties of the identified chakra (each chakra has its own set of unique properties which also link to activities that have, in their own right, been shown to improve mental health and well-being) to correct the imbalances and in so doing help children believe in themselves, their unique superpowers and their special place in the world.

An example of the behaviour equation at work might be

? Your child is having a tantrum.

? You show them the 7 colours of the rainbow and ask them to pick the one that matches their mood.

? They choose red

?They may also be struggling with constipation or diarrhoea.

This tells us that it is very likely that it is their root chakra that is affected and that they are probably scared or anxious, feeling unsafe or insecure about something.

We can then use the properties of the root chakra to inform us what activities your child can do to help them feel better.

Since the root chakra is associated with the element of “earth ,one activity you can try to help children rebalance this chakra is to get them to stomp around in barefeet (outdoors if possible) and punch their fists towards the earth. This helps to ground the child, focus on the here and now and shake off the negative energies from the body.

I believe there is no better time to empower our children to take control, understand and actively create a life full of confidence, self belief and positivity rather than one of stress, anxiety and fear, a life where they can tackle whatever life throws at them with ease and be proud of who they are.

The school holidays are looming and with COVID still in everyone’s minds it makes it difficult to plan anything. Children’s emotions are still likely to be heightened, knowing they may not be able to see their friends as much, knowing they may not be able to go to all the usual places they would during the holidays.

The stress on you of having to deal with tantrums, arguments, what to do if your children are prone to being on electronic devices all day, let alone if you are working mum, can be overwhelming.

That’s why inside the programme you will find a toolbox of over 80 activities that will be at your fingertips.

Just imagine how it would feel to get to the end of the holidays having had a lovely calm summer, creating memories and with a toolbox of over 80 resources and activities to help you deal with the everyday and make everything just that little bit more manageable and less overwhelming your to support your child tackle whatever else life might throw at them in the weeks, months and years ahead with calm and confidence so they can shine like the stars they are.
